Van life: How to stay healthy on the road

Many people can agree, that maintaining our health and wellness is one of the most important factors in life. Without it,  we do not function properly.  Not functioning properly, leads to low performances in work, in our relationships, and hobbies. Problems in our relationships, careers and hobbies, leads to depression, disease and illnesss. Illnesses leads to... well you get what I mean.

  Heading out for a trip of 5,000+ miles through North America in our van, sitting for hours and hours a day, how did we manage to keep ourselves healthy and energized during this trip?

 

1.  Yoga.   

Whether it be practicing outside the parked van, or finding a yoga studio in the cities we stopped by, yoga was the number one tool that kept us going along the way.  Our first stop in North Carolina we had the advantage of going for runs on the beach and practicing yoga in the backyard. Nashville, our third stop, we went for a run in the park and did a little yoga session together after. The next morning we found a studio that offered 5$ hot yoga community classes with shower amneties, what a bonus! After the class, we made it a habit that each city we passed through, to find a yoga studio with showers, to get the best of both worlds!  The second picture below, Shakti yoga studio; was the one in Nashville with community class drop ins ,an amazing teacher, showers with provided lotion, soap, shampoo , deodorant and blow dryer ! It was one of the cutest studios they built in an old victorian style house! Our other favorite, OM SHALA located in Northern California, they let you buy class packets and share them with friends, they have a Sauna a couple showers and amazing yoga classes for every level!  If your not into yoga? Try signing up for visitors passes at your local gyms, 24 hour fitness offers them in every state!

 2. Master Cleanse

Anyone familiar of the master cleanse drink?   Consists of organic lemons, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and distilled water. This is an old detox recipe thats been around for ages. The master cleanse is meant to be drank sol for up to at least 7 days; meant for detoxifying the whole body, flushing out toxins, extra waste and fatig, and rejuvinizing the body from the inside out. My Uncles introduced it to me at a young age whom both use this drink a couple times a year, one of them went up to 40 DAYS ON JUST THIS SIMPLE DRINK. It can also be used as a spiritual detox, many people use to pray for something while doing it. Joackim and I just simply fell in love with the taste, so we decided to add it to our diet for a cheap bonus to alchalize the body along the way. Some other of our favorite drinks we recommend are SYNERGY Kombucha, and the one and only Sambazon Acai drink. Most are familiar with kombucha, a probitic drink with many benefits which also helps to rejuvanize the body from the inside out. The  Sambazon Acai drink, contains not only the super fruit Acai, but natural caffeine from guarana, yerba mate & green tea, the ultimate energy booster without the crash that (I) sometimes tend to get from coffee,  especially perfect for a road trip driving on 11+ hours!

3. Simple Goodness Cooking : Buy Local and Cook

Since America is so expensive to eat out anyway, we found some great local farmers markets on the way and loaded up on fruits, veggies, and grains that we could grill with. We try to then buy any canned food or breads at Costco, which you need to register with for 50$ a year, but its very much worth it.  We have a coleman portable grill that we try to cook everything we can with. Simple, affordable , easy and healthy:) One of our favorite dishes we have come to cook is super simple and affordable. For breakfast you can buy local organic eggs from the small stands you see on most highways especially in California, potatoes or quinoa for your grain/starch, avocado, organic chicken sweet or spicy sausage for protein, brussel sprouts or any tpye of green and top it with goat cheese if your feeling fancy. For dinner you can do the same thing but instead of eggs buy a piece of fish, we buy tilapia for $4 at trader joes that feeds two people and pair it with the same selection mentioned above. Dinner for two all for about 11$ which means 5.50 each, not bad! Road tripping up in the North redwoods we also ended up falling in love with the simple soup and sandwich meal, our favorite was the tomato bisque you can buy at Costco, you get like 6 boxes of soup for 10.00$ . Pair it with an avocado & tomato grilled cheese sandwich, thats about a  $3-4 meal and well I'd say you have yourself the perfect simple winter lunch! Simple goodness, Simple Living

4. Go outside and breathe the fresh air

"Whether it be waking up early to the sunrise for a walk, riding your bike, going for a run, catching a wave, or two, taking a hike in the mountains,  or simply taking a stroll downtown or in a park. Get outside, smell the fresh air, breathe it in and out move your body , BECAUSE YOU CAN !!! "  Words of a famous legend, Scotty D. 

Our favorite places to hike so far have been the beautiful " Big Sur," of california. If you can get there when its not the rainy season, there are tons of hikes, open to the public, and some secret ones that only the locals know of... If you have time to spend some time there, you'll be amazed at the magic trails it has to offer. For us, one of the best natural waterfall showers we ever had so far! Our other favorite place to hike is the good old Redwoods of Northern California. There are tons of hikes, one specifically that we like is by Trinidad beach.  Get up early and you can find the most amazing sounds of all different kinds of species we ran into a baby owl one morning, simply magnificent!
